„Many of your prime influences were selfdestructive. If you' re too big you get selfconscious, if you' re too obscure you feel nervous. So it' s hard. The main thing is songs. You take off jour hat an' the birds fly out of your head, some homing pigeons, some crows, some never get off the ground, some never even hatch. I guess i did borrow a lot to do stuff like that. But it' s good to borrow, borrowing implies that you' re going to give back. That' s the way all music works – you take a little something from here, you bring it over there and pretty soon it finds its way back. I' m not even sure how it' s all gonna hang together yet. All these ideas are very easy to come up with, then the work begins. Well, making music is like everything else, it subscribes to the same laws of the universe. What happens is that you sorta evolve a language. I got my own shorthand. I' ll maybe line the guys up and tell 'em I need a little more Zsa Zsa Gabor, little less Karl Malden. More table and chairs, lads. That sorta thing. Think of a dwarf in a fish tank, boys. Think about 25 chickens on fire running across a barren landscape at night and you' re a fireman with a hose and you gotta douse the chickens before they turn into a burnt meal. You don' t always get there. Sometimes, you gotta a blindfold the musicians. They always give the music an added kick all their own. They might get it all wrong but something else is created along the way. The song survives if it' s got a life. That' s when you know a song' s stamina, when somebody can pick it up an renew it. I try to listen to the noise in my head and invent some junkyard orchestral deviation. I'm trynna get away from that jazzy thing. My writing process has changed. Like when it' s raning again – you have to make sure you have enough things to catch it in. I' m realisin' the possibilities in arranging, exploring. It' s good to write on instruments you don't understand.“

ima biografija i nedostataka. greške u pravopisu, čet'ri slike samo, 40 str za sve u svemu, zanimljivo štivo.

Q: Do you have words to live by?

A: Jim Jarmusch once told me “Fast, Cheap, and Good… pick two. If it’s fast and cheap it wont be good. If it’s cheap and good it won’t be fast. If it’s fast and good it wont be cheap.” Fast, cheap and good… pick (2) words to live by.

Well, ring the bell backwards and bury the axe
Fall down on your knees in the dirt
I'm tied to the mast between water and wind
Believe me, you'll never get hurt
Our ring's in the pawnshop, the rain's in the hole
Down at the Five Points(1) I stand
I'll lose everything
But I won't let go of your hand

Well, Peter denied and Judas betrayed
I'll bail with the roll of the drum
And the wind will tell the turn from the wheel
And the watchman is making his rounds
Well, you'll leave me hanging by the skin of my teeth
I've only got one leg to stand
You can send me to hell
But I'll never let go of your hand

Swing from a rope on a cross-legged dream(?)
Signed with One Eyed Jack's blood
From Temple to Union, to LA and Grand
Walking back home in the mud(2)

Now I must make my best of the only way home
Molly deals only in stone
I'm lost on the midway, I'm reckless in your eyes
Just give me a couple more throws
I'll dare you to dine with the cross-legged knight
Dare me to jump and I will
I'll fall from your grace
But I'll never let go of your hand
I'll never let go of your hand

Elvis Costello+Tom Waits -I Forgot More Than You''ll Ever Know

"I Forgot More Than You''ll Ever Know" was a number one country music single for The Davis Sisters in 1953. The song was the first hit for the duo of Skeeter Davis and Betty Jack Davis and their only one as Betty Jack was killed in an automobile accident the week the record was released.

There were heavy metal bands whose music was being used to torture prisoners in Iraq. They played it real loud to get information. Well, they deprive you of sleep and they play these bands. And that’s all you get to listen to. In the same way that they use it now in the parking lot of 7-11 when they play classical music. It keeps all the hoods away. They blast Beethoven. No one hangs out now, drinks beer in the parking lot. Changed everything.

There''s a house on my block
That''s abandoned and cold
Folks moved out of it a
Long time ago
And they took all their things
And they never came back
Looks like it''s haunted
With the windows all cracked
And everyone call it
The house, the house where
Nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone''s heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?

Well the paint was all cracked
It was peeled off of the wood
Papers were stacked on the porch
Where I stood
And the weeds had grown up
Just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney
And an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever
Come back to the
House were nobody lives

Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away
Did they know what it means
Did someone''s heart break
Or did someone do someone wrong?
So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold
Don''t trade it for silver
Don''t trade it for gold
I have all of life''s treasures
And they are fine and they are good
They remind me that houses
Are just made of wood
What makes a house grand
Ain''t the roof or the doors
If there''s love in a house
It''s a palace for sure
Without love...
It ain''t nothin but a house
A house where nobody lives
Without love it ain''t nothin
But a house, a house where
Nobody lives.

I don’t have fun. Actually, I had fun once. In 1962. I drank a whole bottle of Robitussin cough medicine and went in the back of a 1961 powder-blue Lincoln Continental to a James Brown concert with some Mexican friends of mine. I haven’t had fun since. It’s not a word I like. It’s like Volkswagens or bell-bottoms, or patchouli oil or bean sprouts. It rubs me up the wrong way. I might go out and have an educational and entertaining evening, but I don’t have fun.

“My kids are starting to notice I’m a little different from the other dads. “Why don’t you have a straight job like everyone else?” they asked me the other day. I told them this story: In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, “Look at me…I’m tall, and I’m straight, and I’m handsome. Look at you…you’re all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.” And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, “Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.” So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day.”
